Choosing the right rug size can transform a room — or make it feel off-balance. Whether you're furnishing a living room, bedroom, or dining area, this guide will help you find the perfect fit.
Living Room
For a living room, the most common approach is to choose a rug large enough so that at least the front legs of all major furniture pieces rest on it. A 8'x10' or 9'x12' rug works well for most living rooms. Avoid rugs that are too small — they tend to make the space feel disconnected.
Dining Room
Your dining room rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond each side of the table so chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out. A 9'x12' rug is ideal for most dining tables.
Bedroom
In a bedroom, place a large rug (8'x10' or larger) under the bed so it extends 18–24 inches on each side and at the foot. Alternatively, use two runners on either side of the bed for a cozy, symmetrical look.
Entryway & Hallway
Runners are perfect for entryways and hallways. Choose a width that leaves a few inches of floor visible on each side, and a length that fits the space without bunching.
General Tips
- Always use a rug pad to prevent slipping and protect your floors.
- When in doubt, go larger — a bigger rug makes a room feel more spacious and intentional.
- Use painter's tape on the floor to mock up the rug size before purchasing.
